Udhampur Campus, University of Jammu today organized an interaction and awareness programme under its Community Development Programme Scheme.
With the objective of community development, the campus today organises interaction with village community members and members of MSAI ( Medical students Association of India) first in series of programmes, under Campus initiatives on community development. The interaction of university and school students with MSAI members were held in three sessions to educate the students about lifestyle diseases and health care issues in rural areas. The MSAI organised two different sessions for the university and school students. The medical students explained the concept of lifestyle diseases which are linked with the way people live their lives and how most of the people are struggling with it in their day to day lives. They explained the various lifestyle related disorders like postural problems, obesity, coronary heart disease, hypertension and diabetes mellitus. The MSAI conducted separate interaction sessions for students of Economics and Commerce departments.
The first session started with the discussion on postural problems and the difference between good and bad posture. The second lifestyle problem which was discussed was obesity which is the accumulation of excessive fats in the body and is common among the young generation. The MSAI members also shared their expertise on hypertension and coronary heart disease. In their session they discussed the symptoms, causes and the curative measures of each disorder. They made the students aware that the main cause of all these lifestyle diseases is lack of physical activity and unhealthy eating habits which further attracts various other life taking diseases.To avoid all these lifestyle related disorders, they advised the students to change their lifestyle and include regular exercise of 30 minutes daily with healthy eating habits.

In the second session, MSAI members discussed various health issues in rural areas with the children of the nearby villages. They made the children aware about dental care, personal hygiene, sanitation and waste disposal. They also shared with the children the issues related to adolescence. A separate session was also held for the female school students. It was a learning & interactive session for the students where the members answered all the queries put up by the students satisfactorily.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Hardeep Chahal, Rector Udhampur Campus expressed her gratitude to all the MSAI members who shared their expertise with the students of our campus and the students of the nearby villages under community development programme. She also highlighted the importance of personal hygiene in everyone’s life and how we should change our lifestyle so as to have a healthy body and a healthy mind.

Prof. Hardeep Chahal, while interacting with the village committee members discussed and planned activities to be conducted for the village development. All the members agreed to undertake plantation drive and implementation of varied programmes for the village development. Varied other development activities to be implemented by the village –campus joint coordination committee relating to awareness programmes, are also discussed.
